gina hutchings

residing in chicago, gina spends many hours every day molding and firing clay into works of stunning beauty. her geisha series, inspired by the dolls her mom collected when gina was a child, are fragile and powerful all at once. here's what she had to say when i asked her about her life as a sculptor and her current body of work...
"the moment i began working with clay, i found myself engaged by the tactile process of working with my hands. the primitive and malleable qualities of clay, unpredictable nature of glazes and the unknown variable of different firing methods continue to inspire my process.
my current body of work is based on self-reflection. i incorporate metaphors for universal emotions and mythological and archetypal symbols to relate my personal experiences to others. i utilize masculine and feminine forms, combined with delicate wire, layers of glazes and found object to articulate my ideas. i strive to create unique figures that are appreciated for their tangible yet fragile qualities."
