audry cramblit

taking her cue from live models, Audry Cramblit carves, molds and manipulates clay to create one-of-a-kind sculptures that are simply breathtaking. Her process is a brilliant one that allows her to create multiple pieces, each one different from the next, using a rubber mold she hand made. First she molds a sculpture from clay and creates a rubber mold from it. Because this rubber mold is able to withstand the heat of the kiln, she can use it time and again. Audry takes the mold and hand packs it with clay (different clay depending on what's on hand), then distorts the shape of the mold just before putting it back in the kiln. Once fired, the mold peels away from the clay, revealing a beautiful work of art. Each piece is different because, "the clay's composition changes on a daily basis." Packing of the clay varies as well, so that pieces of clay break away upon completion, creating Audry's "fragments."

Audry hails from Colorado, is a full time artist and teacher, and resides in Chicago with her husband.
